I started coming to Jamaica in 1978. I lived in Spanish Town with some friends I had met in Montréal, and I fell in love the people and the culture in this tough but very fragile country.
In 1988 my son was born so it was time to return to Canada.
As my son grew and took part in organized team sports, I was not only his biggest fan but also a coach for his soccer team. Returning to Jamaica on vacations my son's used shoes, balls, jerseys, and shorts made a huge part of my luggage. Very slowly I collected what I could find and started returning to Jamaica twice a year to with the treasures. Donating parents and children on my son’s teams, soon got involved out and in no time, with a little effort we saw how easy it was to create a huge difference.
I continued to coach my son's team until he reached AAA soccer and then did a couple of years developing new teams.
When I saw what I could do in Jamaica with soccer I stopped coaching to devote my time to collecting and bringing soccer equipment to the ghettos and country sides of this beautiful Island.
I am starting to see the potential of this little mission. The more people that get involved the more I can see the dream becoming reality. Let’s make difference in a life of a youth that was born in the ghetto, where almost every child can only dream of having their own ball.
Teach someone to share today.
It’s simple really - “Every Child Deserves a Ball”
